Preparing for your free trial week
Welcome, we’re excited for you to start your free trial week at American Jujitsu! Here’s what you should know before your first class.
What should I wear to class?
Wear your regular athletics clothes to start, no need to purchase new gear. For jujitsu, we recommend close fitting short or long-sleeve shirts, athletics shorts that won’t fall down while wrestling, or leggings. We train exclusively no gi, so you don’t need to worry about a specific uniform. Eventually you will want to invest in rash guards (we have several you can purchase) and fight shorts and/or spats.
What gear should I bring?
Bring a full water bottle, you are going to get a great workout! We don’t have a drinking fountain, so come prepared. You may also want a towel to dry off between rounds and in the winter we recommend bringing a sweatshirt for to wear during warm ups.
No special gear is required for jujitsu, just yourself!
For kickboxing, you don’t need to have your own gear for the free trial, we have loner gloves you can borrow for class. Once you sign up you will need to invest in gloves and shin guards. You can see the full gear list on our Kickboxing web page.
We highly recommend (and in some cases will require) a mouth guard.
What should I expect during my first class?
You are welcome to join any of our classes during your free trial week, but if you are completely new to wrestling and jujitsu, be sure to join our Fundamentals class on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. Our kickboxing classes are for all levels, so whether you’re new or have been sparring for years, you will get a great workout and learn something new.
The best way to learn is by jumping in and coming back again and again. Don’t wait to get in shape–that will happen if you keep training consistently.
Preparing for your first Jujitsu Class
What should I wear to class?
At American Jujitsu, we only train no-gi jujitsu, which means we don’t require you to wear “gis” or “kimonos.” Wear your regular athletics clothes to start, we recommend short or long-sleeve shirts, athletics shorts that won’t fall down while wrestling, or leggings. Eventually you will want to invest in rashguards (we have several team rashies you can purchase) and fight shorts and/or spats.
What should I bring?
Bring a full water bottle, you are going to get a great workout! We don’t have a drinking fountain, so come prepared. You may also want a towel to dry off between rounds and a mouth guard (a simple boil-and-bite one will do). In the winter we recommend bringing a sweatshirt for warm ups at the start of class.
What should I expect during my first class?
You are welcome to join any of our classes during your free trial week, but if you are completely new to wrestling and jujitsu, be sure to join our Fundamentals class on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. At American Jujitsu, our coaches will help you understand the basics, but the best way to learn is by jumping in, making mistakes, and coming back again. We break our classes down into techniques, situational sparring, and live rolling.
Is jujitsu safe?
Like any physical activity, there is some risk of injury when practicing jujitsu. However, with proper instruction and training, you can minimize your risk of injury. Make sure to tell our coaches and your training partners if you have any existing injuries or concerns. Keeping each other safe is everyone’s responsibility!
