What is Jujitsu

Jujitsu, also known as jiu-jitsu, jiu jitsu, jiujitsu or jūjutsu, is a combat style that originated in Japan and is based on ground fighting, with roots in Judo. The most well-known version is modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu, thanks to the Gracie family. The goal of jujitsu is to submit your opponent through joint locks and strangulations, with many similarities to wrestling and Judo.

What should I wear to class?

At American Jujitsu, we only train no-gi jujitsu, which means we don’t require you to wear “gis” or “kimonos.” Wear your regular athletics clothes to start, we recommend short or long-sleeve shirts, athletics shorts that won’t fall down while wrestling, or leggings. Eventually you will want to invest in rashguards (we have several you can purchase) and fight shorts and/or spats.

What should I bring?

Bring a full water bottle, you are going to get a great workout! We don’t have a drinking fountain, so come prepared. You may also want a towel to dry off between rounds and a mouth guard (a simple boil-and-bite one will do). In the winter we recommend bringing a sweatshirt for warm ups at the start of class.

Are you affiliated with any national groups?

At American Jujitsu, we are unaffiliated, which means we welcome all brands, academies, associations, and styles of jujitsu. We believe in providing a space where jujitsu practitioners of all backgrounds can gather and train to advance our collective understanding of this amazing fighting method. Everyone is welcome in our gym!
